Literature review 1: Height-related changes in body mass index: A reappraisal.

A research was done to study the relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and height in 20-22 year-old patients.

Results:
There were 35,951 participants in the study, including 16204 females and 19747 males. There was a positive correlation between BMI and height in men (regression slope = 0.00717, r = 0.015, p = 0.03), while the correlation was negative in women(regression slope = −0.02811, r = −0.05, p < 0.0001). In multiple regression analysis, when BMI was used as the dependent variable and height, gender, ethnic origin, smoking, oral contraceptive use, and level of recreational exercise as the independent variables, only height, gender, and ethnic origin remained significant in the final analysis (R-square 0.0205, p < 0.0001).

Conclusion:
In young adults, BMI is affected in a subtle, but opposite manner in males and females. In males, BMI increases with increasing height, while in females, BMI decreases with increasing height.

This article gives us some idea as to what other factors would affect BMI, and allow us to explore based on our data we collected.


However, as the articles concludes, we are to be cautious when applying it our study, due to differences as mentioned above in the article. (Ethnicity, Physical Activity Level (Sedentary versus Military as in this case))

It can be concluded that ethnicity would affect our results, and thus we should be cautious when analysing the results.

Literature Review 2: Asians are different from Caucasians and from each other in their body mass index/body fat percent relationship.

Objective: To study the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and body fat per cent (BF%) in different population groups of Asians.

Results:


It has been found that leg length has an effect on the BMI. As seen in the above diagram, a person with shorter legs would have a higher BMI as compared to a person who has longer legs, but with the same body fat percentage.

This lead us to conclude that there is an relationship between height and BMI. When we measure height, the length of the leg is included. Thus, height would be related to leg length and therefore, affect BMI readings.

Secondly, this article highlights how ethnicity would have an impact on BMI readings.


As mentioned by the article, different races in Singapore have different body compositions (body-fat percentage.) Ethnic differences could be also explained by differences in frame size and relative leg length.

In conclusion, this articles highlights how our body frame or leg length can have an impact on BMI. Since leg length is related to height, BMI can be relate to height which we can hypothesis and find out if it is true.

Literature Review 3: Body Mass index is increasing faster among taller persons


In this article, it says that the correlation of BMI and Height, cannot be calculated directly, due to other dependent variables such as gender, age group and racial groups.

This information would definitely affect our results as in Singapore, we have 4 different ethnic groups, and thus this would affect our data analysis.
